We caught up with #TDS24 VIP Guest Dan Meis, Director of Global Sports Design, AECOM, ahead of TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit.

Dan began his career in sports architecture in 1992 with Ellerbe Becket (acquired by AECOM in 2009) as the lead designer of the Manchester Arena. Since 2007, he has served as the founder and managing principal of MEIS Architects, a multi-discipline architecture and design practice, where he led game-changing work on stadiums and entertainment centres that span the globe. Dan also brings decades of experience in leadership roles across architecture firms, including Woods Bagot, Populous and NBBJ. His most notable projects include the Staples Center (Crypto.com) arena in Los Angeles, T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, and the new Everton FC stadium in Liverpool, England.

TheStadiumBusiness: What are the most exciting developments in the field of venue design/development?

Dan Meis: One of the most exciting developments in venue design that we are seeing is the evolution of this building type as a true “urban generator” rather than simply a standalone football ground or arena.  For Everton’s Bramley Moore stadium, we started with an historic but derelict dock in an area of Liverpool that had seen very little attention for several generations.  Now, six years later, as the building is nearing completion, several planned developments will activate the surrounding area with riverside parks and commercial and residential areas, creating a 365-day destination and iconic front door to the city for passing cruise liners.   While we are always focused on a “football first” experience for the fans, the building serves a much larger civic purpose for revitalising this area of Liverpool.

TDS: What’s in the pipeline for AECOM over the next six to 12 months?
DM: We are currently designing a new 20,000-seat NBA arena in Las Vegas and significant renovations of several NFL stadiums focused on enhancing the fan experience and revenue enhancement.  Having recently re-joined AECOM, I am incredibly excited to help lead the growth of AECOM Sports globally.  We currently have offices in LA, Kansas City, NY, and London. I am looking forward to building on the success of Everton’s Bramley Moore to position for several upcoming projects in the UK and Europe.

TDS: What are you most looking forward to about the Design & Development Summit 2024?

DM: I am particularly excited to share our vision for the future of Sports Architecture.  It has long been a very closely guarded niche of the profession with a handful of usual suspects that I believe is ready for some disruption and innovation.  I have fought to achieve this for much of my career, but often in a “David vs Goliath” role against much larger competitors.  It is extremely exciting to be positioned to deliver the kind of out-of-the-box creativity we are known for with the support of one of the world’s largest multi-disciplinary global companies.
